Grade 6 - Science

MS:Earth Science (Credit: 1.00)

The Earth Science course begins with a study of the Earth’s interior structure, forces, and types of rock. Earth’s topography is covered next, including mountains and oceans and forces that form and change surface features over time. Next, students learn about the solar system, star formation, and current theories concerning the nature of the universe. The course is completed by a study of the Earth’s atmosphere, including energy transfer, wind, weather, and climate.

In this unit, students learn about space exploration and the results of the recent space missions. Next, focus shifts to the components of our solar system, the life cycle of stars, and thee ways in which stars are arranged. Finally, students learn about the theories that explain the formation of the solar system and the greater universe, as well as what scientists predict will happen to the universe.

MS:Earth Science: Earth's Land and Water (Credit: 0.25)

In this unit, students engage in seven modules that focus on the general topography of Earth and the formation of Earth's features. Included are water and wind as agents of erosion and deposition, formations in the ocean, and the ocean as valuable resource. Finally, the unit ends with instruction about how Earth, and the clues contained within it, can be used to understand the changes that occur over tome.

MS:Earth Science: Inside Earth (Credit: 0.25)

In this unit, students learn about the major layers of Earth as well as the forces responsible for shaping Earth. Topics include volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate tectonics. In addition, students learn about rock cycle and the different characteristics of each type of rock.

MS:Earth Science: Weather and Climate (Credit: 0.25)

In this unit, students learn about the layers and characteristics of the atmosphere. They learn about the transfer of heat energy from the sun through the atmosphere and how the unequal distribution of heat creates winds. Students also learn about climate regions and factors that influence climate. Finally students study the changes in climate and the role humans play in this process.
