Grade 7 - Florida Science

Florida: M/J Comprehensive Science 2 (Credit: 1.00)

M/J Comprehensive Science 2 is a basic intermediate course intended to expose students to the designs and patterns in the physical universe. This course expands on the Science 600 course, providing a set of basic scientific skills and a broad survey of the major areas of science. Some of the areas covered in Science 700 include the scientific method, overview of the four major areas of science, mathematics in science, astronomy, the atmosphere, natural cycles, weather and climate, human anatomy and physiology, and careers in science. The curriculum seeks to develop the students' ability to be aware of and participate in scientific inquiry. The units contain experiments and projects to capitalize on the students’ natural curiosity. The students will explore, observe and manipulate everyday objects and materials in their environment. Students at this level should show understanding of interrelationships between organisms, recognize patterns in systems, and expand their knowledge of cellular dimensions of living systems. Collectively, this should help students develop and build on their subject-matter knowledge base.

M/J Earth and Space Science is a course that covers an overview of the structure of the Earth, our solar system, galaxy and universe. This course covers topics addressed in grade levels 6-8. A basic overview of scientific inquiry and how scientific investigations are conducted begins each grade level. This course will give an overview of basic cycles on Earth and how the Earth has changed over time, the layers of the Earth, how forces inside impact the surface, and how the Earth fits into our solar system and beyond. The curriculum will develop the ability of the student to participate in scientific inquiry and investigate issues relevant to Earth and space science. Students will explore how the Earth has changed over time and what causes those changes.

M/J Life Science is a course that takes a focused approach to expose students to the building blocks of life and the processes that sustain life on Earth. Each grade begins with a focus on basic scientific inquiry skills to introduce how scientists perform investigations. The curriculum for this course builds the student’s knowledge in Life Sciences starting from the sixth grade to the eighth grade. The course will use the student’s curiosity to understand life forms and how energy is passed from organism to organism. The student will also show ways that humans have impacted the Earth and how to lessen that impact. The units will cover interactions between living organisms from the microscopic level to the whole Earth and the atmosphere beyond.

M/J Physical Science introduces students to the basic skills that scientists use when making scientific investigations. It will build a base for the student to conduct scientific inquiry, which scaffolds up from sixth to eighth grade. This course covers the concepts of force and motion, light and the electromagnetic spectrum, and chemistry. Upon building the foundation for scientific inquiry, students will use those skills to investigate the realm of physical science. The students will show their understanding through projects and experiments to demonstrate how different properties of matter are displayed.
